Lalitpur — Patients have raised serious complaints of fraud and exploitation under the guise of natural and Ayurvedic treatment in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley — the country’s main administrative center. The institution in question, HIMS Shuddhigram Nepal, located in Sanepa, Lalitpur, is accused of unethical practices and patient exploitation.

Operating under the brand name and reputation of India’s HIMS (Health India Medical Science), the center promotes itself as “A New Trust in Natural Healing,” claiming guaranteed cures for chronic diseases like kidney failure, liver problems, diabetes, hypertension, and cancer. The center was established a year ago by a group led by Shyamlal Shrestha.

False Promises and Patient Complaints

However, the reality inside the facility tells a different story. Many patients receiving treatment at the center have come forward through the media, stating they feel deceived and exploited.

One diabetic patient shared,

“I came after hearing they could control sugar levels in 72 hours. I paid NPR 14,500 for a week’s stay — but saw no improvement, and the behavior of the staff was equally disappointing.”

Doctors with BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery) qualifications reportedly show little interest in communicating with patients. A female doctor was frequently seen spending most of her time inside her chamber without engaging with or encouraging the patients. The lack of senior and experienced medical staff was also noticeable.

Poor Hygiene and Unprofessional Services

Patients have raised concerns about poor hygiene — smelly towels, substandard food that does not align with the patients’ health conditions, and overall neglect of cleanliness.

“I came here hoping to return healthier. Instead, I returned sicker,” said patient Ramesh Khanal.

Therapy services are reportedly provided only for 3 hours a day, and patients complain that the remaining time they are left without any comfortable or supportive space to stay.

Exorbitant Fees, Minimal Services

Patients are charged NPR 14,500 per day, while those staying in external accommodations pay up to NPR 3,500 per day. In return, they claim to receive minimal services and attention, labeling the practice as outright exploitation.

Allegations of Labor Exploitation

Not only patients, but staff members including therapists have reported labor exploitation. The number of staff is said to be insufficient compared to the volume of patients. Excessive workload, lack of rest areas, and unmanageable working conditions have been reported.

Calls for Investigation and Action

Both patients and employees are demanding immediate inspection and strict action from the Department of AyurvedaLabor DepartmentLalitpur Metropolitan City, and other concerned regulatory authorities. They have also urged India’s HIMSGram to take notice of the unauthorized and misleading use of their brand and reputation.

Such serious issues of health negligence, exploitation, and lack of regulation in the capital city are alarming. If concerned authorities fail to act swiftly, it could severely impact the health and rights of the general public.
