Minister for Education, Science and Technology Bidya Bhattarai has resigned.
Bhattarai submitted her resignation letter to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday afternoon. The Prime Minister’s Secretariat has informed Khabarhub that Bhattarai’s resignation letter has been received.
Bhattarai’s resignation comes at a time when teachers from community and government schools across the country have been protesting in Kathmandu for 20 days.
The departmental minister resigned at a time when Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is being more lenient on fulfilling the demands of teachers protesting in the capital, including the School Education Act.
Earlier, on April 20, Education Minister Bhattarai and Speaker Devraj Ghimire held talks regarding the demands raised by the teachers. The Speaker had held talks with Minister Bhattarai and School Education Subcommittee Coordinator Chhabilal Bishwakarma that day.
At that time, Minister Bhattarai had said that discussions were underway between teachers and the government to make the decision that the Council of Ministers and the Ministry can take immediately and present the Education Bill in Parliament in the first week of the upcoming session of Parliament. However, despite her statement, Prime Minister Oli is still not positive about fulfilling the demands of teachers.
