The Department of Jail Management has stated that 11,500 prisoners across the country are still absconding.
According to the department, although some of the prisoners who escaped from 26 prisons across the country have returned, 11,461 prisoners are still on the run.
A total of 13,779 prisoners, including 12,817 from 26 prisons and 962 from juvenile correctional homes, had escaped. Of these, 2,318 were arrested and returned on their own, the department has learned.
After the GenjZ movement became violent, prisoners broke into and set fire to the 24th Gagate prison on August 24. From the leader of the gold smugglers, Chudamani Upreti ‘Gore’, to the leader of the kidnappers, Indian citizen Uday Setty, all escaped.
