A separate ward will be established in Bheri Hospital Nepalgunj for the treatment of sickle cell anemia disease seen in the Tharu community of Western Terai of Nepal.
Health and Population Minister Pradeep Paudel has decided to establish a special ward for the treatment of the major health problems of the Tharu community.
Although this problem is seen in large numbers in the Tharu community, there is no adequate arrangement for its treatment. Therefore, Minister Paudel has decided to establish a haemoglobinopathy ward at Bheri Hospital Nepalganj and has decided to make arrangements for the patients who are admitted.
Last month, Minister Paudel had discussed this problem of the community with a team including Tharu rights activists about sickle cell treatment and announced that some arrangements would be made for this. According to the Ministry of Health, it has been decided to establish a ward in Bheri Hospital targeting the area where the Tharu community has more population.
Sickle cell disease is seen as a hereditary health problem in the Tharu community. According to the data of the Ministry of Health, almost 12 percent of the citizens of the community are affected by this disease.
The Tharu community living in Banke, Bardia, Kailali, Kanchanpur and other places of Western Terai have been more affected by sickle cell disease.
According to the ministry, in case of poor patients, expenses up to 1 lakh rupees will be arranged for surgery, medicine and medicinal materials, additional diagnostic services, bed service charges, etc.
