The way to export electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh has been opened. On Thursday, this road has been opened for Nepal with the signing of an electricity sale agreement between three companies from Nepal, India and Bangladesh. Along with this, Nepal will export electricity to a third country for the first time. Nepal has been exporting electricity to India since three years.

A tripartite power sale agreement (PSA) was signed between Nepal Electricity Authority, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) and India’s NTPC Electricity Trading Corporation (NVVN) during a program held on Thursday in Kathmandu. Nepal will export 40 MW electricity to Bangladesh in the first phase.

A tripartite agreement has been reached between the entities of the three countries as Nepal will sell the electricity, it will have to be transported through India’s transmission line and Bangladesh will purchase it. In the agreement, Executive Director of Nepal Electricity Authority Kulman Ghising, President of BPDB. Rejul Karim and NVVN CEO Renu Narang signed.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Energy Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Deepak Khadka and Bangladesh’s Forest, Environment, Climate Change and Water Resources Minister Syeda Rizwana Hasan. Ambassador of India to Nepal Naveen Srivastava was also present in the event.

Although the date was set for the tripartite agreement last July, it was moved after the political demonstrations in Bangladesh. Kulman Ghising said that it was a milestone in South Asia’s energy cooperation.

It is mentioned in the agreement that the Nepal Electricity Authority will export electricity to BPDB of Bangladesh at the rate of 8 rupees 64 paise per unit and 96.4 (US cents) per unit. While exporting electricity to Bangladesh, the ‘wheeling charge’ for using the transmission line of India’s NVVN will be paid by the Bangladeshi company.

Nepal will install an electricity meter in Muzaffarpur, India. The record of how much electricity has been exported to Bangladesh will be in that meter. The technical loss up to that point will be borne by the authority itself. It is also mentioned in the agreement that the Bangladesh side will pay for the technical damage of the Bangladesh border from Muzaffarpur. According to this, the price of electricity sold by Nepal at 6.4 cents is estimated to reach 7.6 cents per unit when it reaches Bangladesh. is

Bangladesh will receive electricity from India through the Behrampur (India)-Bhedamara (Bangladesh) 400 KV transmission line. This agreement was signed for the export of electricity for 5 years. According to this agreement, 144 million units of electricity will be exported to Bangladesh every year, Ghising informed. Ghising also informed that about 1 trillion 21 crore rupees 990 lakh 20 thousand US dollars worth of electricity is exported to Bangladesh every year. He said that the export will start after getting the necessary permission from India. He said that the target is to export 10,000 MW to India and 5,000 MW to Bangladesh.
