Chaturdashi is on Friday at 2:51 p.m. The Nepal Panchang Adjudicating Committee has stated that it has been decided to celebrate Mahashivaratri on this day as Chaturdashi falls on Thursday at midnight. Prof. Dr. Ram Chandra Gautam, Chairman of the Committee, said that since Brahma assumed the form of Shiva at midnight on the day of Falgun Krishna Chaturdashi, worship, adoration and darshan on the day of Chaturdashi at midnight would bring happiness, peace and prosperity in this world. Adherents of Vedic Sanatan Hindu religion have been bathing in rivers, ponds and lakes since this morning and worshiping at the Shivalaya. Named after the night of Shivaji’s birth, this festival is mentioned in scriptures including Shiva Purana as one of the four major nights called Kalaratri, Moharatri, Sukhratri and Shivaratri. Celebrated on the day of Falgun Krishna Chaturdashi, this festival is also considered as the most beloved day of Lord Shiva, Ashutosh, who instilled religion in the hearts of the miserable and suffering beings. It is said that Shivaratri is celebrated in the month of January because the trees, plants and weeds that are decaying due to Mahadev’s Rudratva i.e. the element that cries or destroys the world will start sprouting in Phagun due to Mahadev’s Shivatva (element for the welfare of the world). Today, on the day of Mahashivaratri, which is considered to be the best of the fasts, devotees purify themselves, worship in the Shiva temple, fast and offer milk, dhaturo and bel leaves to Lord Shiva There is a religious belief that one should not fast on the day of this festival and stay awake all night. Today, in the belief that it is winter for Lord Mahadev, people ask for firewood in every house, chowk and temple and make offerings on the same fire by chanting hymns. On this day, which is a national cultural festival, in addition to the four types of worship at Pashupatinath at four o’clock in the morning, Mahadeep, Akhanddeep, Lakshyabatti and Dipotsav as well as Lakh Belpatra are offered. Classical dances are performed in the music ashrams of Kailashkut and Kiranteshwar. Today, pilgrims from various parts of the country, including neighboring India, flock to the Pashupatinath Temple to pay homage to Lord Mahadev and to attend the Shivaratri festival.
