The draft resolution passed by India was supported by 177 countries and as a result, the first World Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015. This year, the theme for the day is ‘Yoga for well-being’. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has asked its member nations to practice Yoga. Experts also believe that Yoga can help COVID-19 patients through quarantine and isolation.
While Yoga has proved to be instrumental in helping people suffering from different ailments, it is also very fruitful for people lodged in prisons. Prisons in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Europe, and India, have been urging inmates to engage in Yoga – to help their well-being and health.
Yoga helps in stress management and encourages practitioners to have a positive outlook towards life. It helps in fighting the blues, channelling energies and stimulating positive thinking. Many prisoners struggle with negativity and a lack of direction while they are lodged behind the bars. Practising Yoga helps them clear their heads and think about the possibilities that lie ahead of them.
