Kathmandu,Nepal- Pt. Nishikant Sonwalkar (Sc.D., MIT) is a highly respected and internationally acclaimed Tabla maestro of the North Indian classical tradition, renowned for his mastery, innovative pedagogy, and lifelong dedication to music and education.
Pt. Sonwalkar received his formal training in Indian classical music under the guidance of eminent gurus Pt. Kiran Deshpande and Pt. Sharad Khargoankar of the Indore Gharana, founded by Ustad Jahangir Khan. During his early career in India, he performed extensively as a Tabla soloist on All India Radio and Doordarshan Television, earning recognition for his depth of rhythm and expressive artistry.
Over the past four decades in Boston, USA, Pt. Sonwalkar has accompanied numerous legendary Indian classical musicians. His collaborations include renowned vocalists such as Firoz Dastoor, Gulam Mustafa Khan, Vinayak Torvi, Ganapati Bhatt, Gokulotsav Maharaj, Vidyadhar Vyas, Sanjeev Abhyankar, Sudha Malhotra, Sujata Bhattacharya, Tripti Mukherjee, Sumitra Guha, and Subhra Guha. He has also performed with distinguished instrumentalists including Pt. Buddhadev Dasgupta, Bhaskar Chandavarkar, Ustad Shahid Parvez, and Jamir Ahmad Khan, among many others. Demonstrating remarkable versatility, Pt. Sonwalkar has contributed to Jazz-Fusion recordings with flutist Abby Rabinovitz, including the albums Flute Stories and We Used to Dance. His scholarly engagement with rhythm has led him to deliver invited lectures on Indian Classical Rhythms at prestigious institutions such as MIT, Berklee College of Music, and the New England Conservatory of Music.
He is the co-founder of LearnQuest Academy of Music in Waltham, Massachusetts, where he served as Master Faculty of Indian Classical Drums (Tabla). Since 1994, he has taught several hundred students worldwide, both in classroom settings and through online instruction.
Pt. Sonwalkar is widely admired for his unique and highly effective teaching methodology, which guides students systematically from simple rhythmic cycles to the most complex and advanced talas. Rooted in the traditional Guru-Shishya Parampara, yet enriched by modern cognitive science, mathematical patterns, and experiential learning theories, he fondly refers to his approach as the “MIT Gharana.” His students consistently praise his method for making even the most intricate Indian rhythms accessible, engaging, and enjoyable for learners of all ages.
Beyond music, Pt. Sonwalkar holds a Doctor of Science (Sc.D.) degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He has served as an MIT faculty member in Engineering and as a Principal Educational Architect. His leadership roles include Co-Chair of the EdTech Circle at MIT Enterprise Forum and Chair of Professional Development at MIT CoB. He is also the Founder, President, and CEO of IntellADAPT, an online education company dedicated to advancing global STEM education through Adaptive AI and EEG-based brainwave learning technologies.
In the media and arts domain, he has served as Music Producer and Host of a monthly Multicultural Music Magazine on Arlington Television, part of the Public Access Television Network.
His discography includes the acclaimed Tabla solo album “Rhythm Improvisations,” available on iTunes. He has also produced CD/DVD projects in Indian classical and devotional music, including Dhrupad recordings with Mrs. Priti Chakravarty and “Devotion,” a Bhajan CD/DVD with Kumkum Dilwali Mathur.
